toying with the idea of modding my asm g2 skimmer. i like simple skimmers such as this, and it already is gate valve modded. the lazy upgrade would be to change to the sedra 5000 instead of the 3500 and say i did something for the better. instead, my plan is to use the sedra 3500 as a recirculation pump on the skimmer and plumb the return drain direct into the skimmer body with a 350- 500 gph return pump for return from the sump back to the tank. this would match the proper flow rate on the skimmer and should negate the changes made by the water level fluctuations in the sump. and it will be a higher percentage of water that passes through the skimmer instead of just rolling back to the display tank. any critique of my idea here?

after years of just the gate valve mod on my asm g2 i am considering doing the recirc mod with the sedra 3500 that is on the skimmer now and direct injecting the tank overflow into the skimmer feed matching my return pump to a sedra 5000 output of 500 GPH +/- figuring in of course the head loss of pushing the water up from the Sump 4 feet. ideas? input?

here is a thread of interest to me: ASM mod - Page 2

my hesitation is the air that will be added down the drain tube into the skimmer. should a plumbing trap of some kind be installed or just don't worry about it and hook it up?

ro/di holding tank up and filling as of ten minutes ago. 32 gallon brute trash can with a kent float. it sits right over the pit for the houses sump pump so even an overflow before i get the "overflow" bulkhead in won't really matter. finally ro/di on demand instead of filling the sump a trickle at a time.

recalibrated dual tds meter i picked up at the dexter swap. inlet water to rodi is 160 ppm after water softener. after rodi it is 0 ppm.

original measured source water had a tds of 340, meter was borrowed so unsure of calibration. 340 ppm to 160 ppm from a water softener???

so my pfo m59 dual ballast is burning up the other capacitor. went from loving my lights with both the ushio and plusrite bulbs to wondering what i was thinking this past week. took me sitting there watching them fire up in a dark room to realize the left side was WAY off and we had problems. capacitor king to the rescue again, gonna have steller lighting once more in just a couple days.

Comparing bulbs on this ballast again one at a time. Ushio 10k, plusrite 14k and 20k. I like them all. The ushio by far is the brightest with a 99% white looking light, the 1% is a touch of yellow but is acceptable. The 14k plusrite is gorgeous with a very white light and a small touch of blue. The 20k plusrite is beautiful, crisp white with an actinic touch. I am going to have to have others look at all three to make a decision on which one is the best. Par and all the other arguable "this bulb is better" stuff is unknown on the plusrites as of now. I do know that coral was doing well under them years ago so i will go with whatever i decide has the best look to it.

@SIR PATRICK time to come on over for a lighting decision and beers...

Im running a 14k pulserite bulb, 250w currently. I feel it needs actinic supplimentation.

Never seen the 20k....heard they dont last long, compared to the 14k.

Never was a Ushio fan.

Illl have to stop by soon, check them out.
I have heard all sorts of rumors on these bulbs. I can say that the color is as good or better than the $80+ bulbs and without a par meter the jury is out. The 20k is an awesome looking bulb. I spent a couple hours on RC and other pages last night researching. Initial par reported is awesome, 6 months later there is no report. Gotta find someone with a par meter than can come over a few times to check these things.

here is some info i found interesting... http://www.pluslight.com/showproduct.asp?id=34
