This has been a debate of mine for a few years when I had a tank up and running I did a water change every 2 weeks religiously and then I deployed for 7 months and my wife never did a single change when I got back it was the best the tank had ever been so it is interesting to see what people say

I try and do 5 gallons every 2 weeks in a 70 gallon total system, but that's more so because I'm fighting algae and sucking a ton out. Some people have great success with none at all and just dosing Ca/Alk/Mag as needed...then there's the guy on RC that's doing 16 gallon weekly changes on a 60gal system lol

When you have a good feel for your tank it will tell you. My brother is new, he now knows that if particular corals are not looking “happy” he has waited to long. He now does a water change every two weeks and his coral are “happy”.

If your tank is experiencing issues you may need to vacuume and do water changes often to resolve. I have done water changes every few days to win battles. It just depends... you figure out what your tank needs over time. Initially come up with a plan and be consistent. You can back off a bit and watch results. If ok stick with that for a while before changing again. Try to be consistent and be sure to use RO water.
