wow can we keep it civil

I hardly see a reason to get mean and bitter on either side people makes there choices for a variety of reasons I used to drive a suv 13mpg average so I am a bad evil person then I traded it in for a more economical ford focus I did this simply because I go sick of paying $70 bucks plus a tank and spending 20-30 to visit my folks for a few hours that was the main reason for my decision. not to be necessarily environmentally friendly though that is part of the out come. I also know people that have motorcycles simply because they like them. I know people that simply need a truck or SUV or Van say construction workers. people make choices for a variety or reasons. I see no reason to attack them for any of them. and we all feel the pain at the pump according to www.detroitgasprices.com the lowest is $3.83 the highest is $4.35 that is .52 cents difference so I am interested in possible price gouging. ;)

well so far its definitely made an impact on what we are doing this weekend for memorial day..

was hoping to do a mini vacation up at the cabin upnorth.. but at 4.00 a gallon.. just isnt going to happen.. over 100 just in gas , just doesnt seem logical anymore.. we both drive mini vans V6's .. mine gets about 25-27mpg
and I beleive red's gets around the same.. not the greatest but we have a gang of kids :D pretty much as small as we can get.. and that really isnt bad on gas millage I dont think..

Deb.. how is your mans jeep? all the jeeps I had were junk on gas.. regardless of 4 or 6.. was like around 14-16 mpg

the best car I had was a toyota corolla.. was getting 38 mpg man that was a great car.. late 90's car excellent condition until some jack--- hit me..

I am working the weekend so the price of gas will nto impact me for the holiday but next month we are going to Boyne and that might hurt a little. The good thing is the house we have is a friend of the families so no cost there ;) but I am expecting a couple hundred in gas to get there and back. That will be our vacation this year. If this keep up I think I will just take two weeks off and work around the house.

I cannot see how gas prices being what they are will be good for economic gorwth and the comments by our President recently regarding how the stimulus check will help americans cope with the rising cost of gasoline makes me pause and wonder if this is his last gift to big oil before he leaves office. I don't know but 35 billion in combined profite for the first three motnhs of this year is pretty hefty. The big three are really going to be hurting and I feel for anyone with a job at a plant or supplier to them.

Oh, the safety myth, I forgot about that one.
I actually take offense to your comment that SUV and truck drivers get what deserve. I'm so tired of tree huggers making snotty comments. When they make my SUV in a eco friendly model I'll be happy to sell my SUV. As for the safety myth I actually was the cream cheese btwn two trucks with my piece of crap compact car several years ago. I hated that car in college and still hate them. Gas prices are out of control and I say lets go to alaska for our oil. I only buy from gas companies that buy stricly american can you say that

.
He said he's never checked it but it's supposed to get around 20mpg

I guess I get what I deserve when my SUV helps me support my business because a car is to small and impracticle for my work. I guess I get what I deserve by buying a truck that uses E85 (corn oil). Does your car use alternative fuel, if not your supporting the problem as well. What a jerk statement! I bet you drive a honda!?!

I guess lem is getting what he deserves because he makes a living by driving a hauler? That was a pretty insensitive statement when you know nothing about anybody except what types of corals they like!

To the topic at hand. Driving slower can help a lot. When I was driving on 96, I would go around 85. I had always read about driving slower being more efficient, so I tried to give it a try. I topped myself at the speed limit (I could go below 70, but not above). Here's what I found:

My mileage increased 1.5 mpg.
Despite what most people predicted, I did NOT get "run off the road". Sure, there are occasionally people who blow by, but I don't care; in fact, now I laugh, because I know what it's doing to their mileage.
My one way commute went from about 22 min to a whopping 23 minutes.

Surprisingly, I found my drive to be a lot less stressful. I no longer got competitive about people trying to weave by me, or blocking people in, or anything like that. My sphincter didn't tighted up if I saw police clocking the highway. I was just much more relaxed in general when I got to work.

BTW, I started this about 2 years ago, so it was well before the price of gas had really skyrocketted, but it's even more handy now.

Everyone,
I probably pulled half the replies because they were either off topic, argumentative, or showing disrespect to others.

Mike started a good thread on outrageous gasoline prices that impact all of us.....and he asked "How is it affecting you?" Let's keep the discussion on topic and be respectful of differing opinions, otherwise, the thread will be pulled and warnings issued.

I like my Scion xB and for a little four banger it has decent power. My wife and I have been talking about it this evening and 4.09 makes us not want to drive anywhere we don't absolutely have to go. I guess I am lucky that I work twelve hour shifts because that saves me a couple round trips a week to work.

I drive a Grand Am that gets between 25-30. I don't drive anywhere I don't have to - but I visit a lot of hospitals and they are all over the place. So I combine runs to places, whenever I can.

BTW, Thanks Beakerbob and yeah, that one comment should be removed :(

You can only consume and pollute so much before mother earth finds a way to hit back.

I think high gas prices are excellent. American automakers finally have a reason pursue fuel efficient and fuel independent models.
Let me say first, polluting less is a good thing. Next, oil will not be what propels us in the coming years. In the effect that higher gas prices makes us more conscientious of how we burn our cash, is a good thing.

Now, let me state this very clear, to the point and no one should miss this.

THE BIG THREE OIL COMPANIES ARE MAKING SO MUCH MONEY, THAT AND I QUOTE A FROM A WELL REGUARED FINACIAL INSTITION, THAT "IT IS LIKE THEY ARE PRINTING THEIR OWN MONEY"!!!!!!!
People, why is it we accept all of our governments constraints (I am a liberal at heart), but yet, no one and I mean no one, is questioning WHY the big three oil companies are printing their own cash! Why? it is a rhetorical statement, because it is our government, BOTH dems and repubs that allow the lobbyist run this country, don't be fooled, we have zero control, it's the lobyist that control the power! Until we force our elected people into ignoring the lobbyist, it will continue until at last, we are a country of two classes, the haves and the haves not! Take away 60% of the profits of the big three oil company and we have gas at $1.80 a gallon! But the people are either uneducated or choose not to care, with their voice and vote. So Adam, if you are happy that the execs at SHELL, EXON and MOBIL are getting bonus so big it would make the top baseball players salary look small. Is that what we want? Not me.

I hope that our kids and their kids continue the brain trust and invent truly good propulsion, that doesn't pollute or deplete the earths resources. I am a pragmatist and believe we will prevail. But please, don't believe OPEC or any other big oil producers are holding us at gun point (who is the largest importer of oil to the USA? Hmmm, Canada!).

Rant at the big three if you will, they simply provided us with what we wanted and until SHELL, MOBIL and EXON, decided to gouge us, it would have been okay until we invented a better way.

For those folks that say, Ha, you get what you deserve, I hope you are independently wealthy. Because the famous trickle down theory is true and it will trickle down to people that "only" pay $10 dollars more, you think it stops there? Think again. It takes awhile, but it is not just your gas budget that will take a dive, it is EVERYTHING, it will effect the country. So as you sit back and say, HA, I told you so, be prepared to cut back on not just your gas bill, but everything.

People, say, Europe has had gas expensive for a long time, they are making it. Well, first, they aren't making it, most every country in Europe is failing. But even bigger, we are not Europe, we don't have small area's to be covered by rail. Maybe you wish we did, but, it's not gonna happen, we are too spread out!

A quick note about the "myth" of safety. Please choose, there are two cars on the road and they are about to be t-bones, one is a Yukon, the other a Mini Cooper, now quick, which automobile do you want to be in? It's not a myth, it's a fact, until all vehicles are similar size, big wins and little loses. Do you know what hospital workers call motorcyclist? Moving donors!

Closing, yes, going toward the goal of less pollutants and better use of our earth is a good thing, just be careful of how you get there.

Dan

Do you guys think gas prices are here to stay then? I read an article recently that gave pretty good evidence that this is not a bubble we are seeing either in the oil market and another one that said now all eyes are on oil in the stock market becasue energy prices are eroding disposable income and driving inflation.

A scion ? It figures.

Just picked up a 08 Grand Prix yesterday. 18 city, 28 highway. Came with a full tank of gas too. That was nice of them.
