I saw a thread few days ago of a reefer who started with multiple frags of montipora (diff colors), glued them onto a big plate, it grew, and now he's got multi-colored montipora. Kinda neat that we can generate in our tanks, things nature never intended (or so it seems). In any event, What's the absolute minimum to get a decent size frag/growth tank running? I'm thinking the following, what's your experience?

Tank: 48" x 18" x 12" (Shallow)
Lights: PC (4x65W)
Hang-On back refugium (with mud) + Protein skimmer.

LR + LS (Of course)

Would this do it? Just don't wanna break the bank as this is a hobby, not a commerical operation :)

This monti?

Personally, I like to tie-in frag tanks with the display... it will keep it nice and stable with the exact params as your DT, and it's less work to keep up.

I'd also go with T5s instead of PCs.

Keep in mind frag tank is different than QT tank.

BTW - forget the mud.

Yup, that's the one. Great work, isn't it?
I'd try different colors though ... for the color-blind amongst us.

Good idea to hook up to the DT but, with the DT in the dining room and the Frag Tank in the basement, it'll be tough.

Are you married? :sarcastic:

You could plumb a drain/return lines through the floor up into your DT.

If not, you definitely can run seperate systems... however IME when i do that I ALWAYS take better care of one than the other.

BTW, montis are super cool when you do this, but one will overgrow and outcompete the other eventually... might take a couple months, might be over a year. But it's the nature of coral to outcompete each other, same species or not.

Well ... there is also the option of running the water tubes in the wall, in-between 2 dry-walls. Kinda neat/clean but lotsa work.

Saw a great post where the guy cut a rectangular hole in a wood floor (the size of a standard heat vent). Then we he moves all he has to do it drop the cover on it.
Uh... wow... GREAT idea!!!

I'm young and rent still, so drilling holes is always a major issue and/or concern (depending on landlord ;) )

~ Thanks for the tip! ~

Be careful tocheck with your building codes. Those are not the same from state to state. Every piece of wire I run here in Illinois, has to be inside a metal tube (for additional outlets) -That was not the case in Michigan.
