I know they're a hot topic over on RC but I haven't head much talk on here about Nitrate and Phosphate reducing Biopellets. This has begun to grab my attention due to all the reviews I've been reading as well as that it is the preferred method of a few of the guys who have won RC TOTM (including this months winner).

Although some claim it is essentially vodka dosing that you don't have to dose everyday, I wonder if anyone out there is:
A) using it
B) thinking about using it
C) has used it and doesn't anymore
D) is considering it with probiotics
E) considering it to replace their probiotic system

I've had really good luck with a product called "chemi-pure elite" which does the same thing as bio-pellets claims. I cannot talk high enough about the results. My ten gallon used to go from 5ppm nitrates to 20ppm in one week. 6 months ago I added my hob refugium and the tank stayed pretty much constant at 10ppm. I could never get my nitrates under 5ppm. Josh from Pruess recommended the product to me and said he's been using it with great success. 2 days after I added the chemi-pure bag to my fuge, the nitrates where zero, and when I say zero I mean ZERO! All my tests come back clear not even a hint of pink. I cannot attest to the potency of biopellets but can confirm there are products on the market that do what you are looking for.

note: even though my nitrates are zero I do still have cyano. I swear if the world ended tomorrow the only survivors would be cyanobacteria, cockroaches, and Keith Richards.

Chemi Pure Elite is a mix of carbon, DI resin, and ferric oxide. The bio pellets are a carbon source based polymer that bacteria grow on and consume along with the phosphates and nitrates. These only need to be replaced as they dissolve while the chemi pure will need to be replaced every 2-4 weeks depending on stocking levels and nutrient levels.

I wish I would have checked this thread before I saw you today Jason. Where did you end up getting yours from? All of the online vendors I've found are sold out. How do you plan to run them? I was considering taking the sponges out of my TLF150 and using them through there.

My nitrates are between 5-10 and my phosphates don't show on a test tube (I need to them tested on hanna). I keep a heavy bioload and would like to feed more and this sounds a little more attractive than vodka/mb7 dosing (although I picked up MB7 from you guys today just in case I can't get my hands on any pellets)

I just installed NP reducing biopellets on my system today. Anxious to see the result. Check out the comments from the guy who has the current TOM on Reef Central regarding biopellets. From what I've read having the output of the reactor directed towards the intake of the skimmer is critical. I bought mine from Premium Aquatics.

Sounds like there's a few of us taking on this experiement!

Mike

yeah the bio pellets are nothing like chemi-pure. also i have done the mb7/vodka and have had good results in the past in an old set up. should have my order the first of the week and i expect it to start showing signs of ulns in about 3 weeks or so. i have a mainly sps reef and am looking to get more insane colors from my corals. so it will be neat to see how this works. it is also nice to see a few guys on here that are going to try this too.
