Word of caution to those trying to bring down your tank temps.
DONT bring it down too fast! A fast change in temps will severely stress your corals. I have had a tank as warm as 90 with no losses. You should bring it down SLOWLY over several hours-just the way it went up. A quick drop can kill.

Wow now I am really starting to feel like a whimp. I have my Central air set at 68 and dont touch it lol. The heaters areon in my tanks hehe. What can I say I hate to sweat lol...
I'm jealous, but not of the electric bill. At home (with the tanks) we set the temp at closer to 75-78, depending on who last touched the thermostat (its an anual fight back and forth between my dad and my mom. Dad would like it at 68 too :p). The bill on the other hand...

And now in Lansing, I'm lucky if I get the house down to 80, but as long as its not so danged humid, its not too bad. Came back today to a house at 94 (thank goodness theres no tanks here... yet... and when they are they'll be in the basement).

As for the tanks, we have had our 150 approach 86 degrees (85.8ish) and have seen no negative effects from such. I wouldn't reccomend this for normal operation but for short periods of time I haven't noticed it to have too much of an adverse effect beyond certain corals not opening as much as they previously had. Now we have fans on the sump, as well as four fans venting the canopy to keep things nice and comfortable. It flirts with 84 now, but rarely goes above 83 which helps me sleep at night given that I'm 100 miles away from the tank and by the time I get word of an issue it might be too late.

Freeze water in empty 2 liters or ziplock bags and float them in the water...

Sump is in the basement and no fans on either tank or sump and tank temp holds at about 80.. Toaday outside temps reached about 90+ and tank stayed at 80.. I have to clean my return pump as it performing at 1/2 capacity or else my tank temp stays around 78.. Need to cleam my pump

The batteries went dead in my programmable thermostat last thursday. When that happens evidently my ac shuts off. When I got home around 9:30pm the temp in my house was a balmy 92 degrees and the temp in my little 6 gallon nano wa 95.1 degrees........ took me about 1 1/2 hours to get it down to 87 and then I went to bed. As far as I can tell I did not lose anything... I feel pretty lucky. my blasto's aren't opening as much as they did..... but they still look ok. I have one colony of zoas that is only half opening, but the other half still look ok, just not open. It has normally been running about 83 thru the day. Today it was 85 when I got home.....

I have a chiller on my big tank at work.......... as long as the chiller runs..... I'll be fine there........

After talking with my mom, and seeing this, I became concerned, but she put my mind at ease. The temperature in the 150 didnt rise above 83 today care of the fan on the sump and the vented canopy. I don't know about any other tanks, but with the AC set at 74 (lower than normal) things should be no different than they were before.

Yeah I need one too-my basement is bad!
You're seeing it all wrong. Put up some wood paneling, and some fake tropical trees, and sell visits to DIY Reef's new tropical lounge sauna!

I have a 45 pint low temp dehumidifier. You need to get one taht will run at temps lower than 60degrees for a basement environment if you wnat ot be safe about it.

Do not place it in the same room as the tank if you can avoid it. What you want to do is pull some moisture out of that room without really increasing the evap too much. My unit is located in another are of the basement and it works well.

I had it originaly set at 45% but I could feel my nose drying out! so I raised it to 55. My house seems to stay colder as well not that I have this unit running.

The thing about Air Conditioning is that it pulls out humidity from the air as latent heat before it removes the sensible heat. By using a dehumidifier for removing humidity, you can increase the efficiency of your A/C. I cool my water with fans, but that heat goes into the air as humidity. I then need to remove it from the air to make myself comfortable. Right now my corals are more comfortable than I am.

This is the first summer ever where I have not had to really freak about the weather being this hot. It is a major relief not to be panicked about it. My A/C is set at 77 (we turned it up to be responsible during the really hot weather) and my house feels like an ice box compared to outside.

I do attribute the cooler temps (feeling colder in the house ) to using the dehumidifier. When I first filled the tank I could feel the dampness but since using the Dehumidifier it is nice and cold and dry down stairs. As you can imagine the basement is 73 degree (it is colder than the first floor) and I am spending time in my recliner in front of the tank :)

I just finished hanging shelves in my aquarium closet (the one under my stairs) to get all my extra stuff organized. The stuff you find man!!

The temperature did not drop this night. It was at 85 this morning! The AC (small window unit) is running full power and it is still hot.

But the worst thing  they shut the water off today till 3 pm. Roadwork and something. Can't even take a shower or cook or anything.

I think I am slowly turning into a steamed vegetable.

I hit 86 yesterday with a chiller runner, with the chiller and 60% of my tank in the garage it can not keep up., I just turn the MHs off and let the chiller do what it can. I just wish they would run better in 100+ degee weather
