Trust me my Cross Hatch would love to see that crawling around and I am sure it would not make it to its stomach in one piece. My hand can attest to that. Maybe try one before you break it down. Ugly things no matter what they are. did you go out and buy a lottery ticket, good luck no matter which way you decide to go.

I think that there is too much hype about this isopod here... sure, they attach to fish.. it was seen, yeah they eat dead brine shrimp... ok that's a good thing... since it's a free scavenger... maybe if you add the right animal to your tank, it will be free food... this thread just seemed to get out of hand...

OMG OMG OMG It's gonna kill!!!! *sigh* it could but, I doubt it's a reason to shut down an entire tank, especially if there's another creature that will eat them that isn't negative towards a reef, seriously if these are as bad as everyone is making them out to be, our oceans would be teaming with these and they would have killed off almost everything... it's just another reef organism.

If you're THAT worried about the stupid thing, shut your tank down and start over.

I thought I should add this.
This is just how I feel.
Notice: I never said they were NOT what you said they were, I never said you were lying, and I never said you were right. Because I don't know.

Lol

Thats why I came on here. For good advice. I'm sure in the wild there re animals that keep them in check. I want one for my tank. Thats why I came on here in the first place. Dr.Ron (a scientist) said he thought it was the same isopod that I thought it was. I am sending some to him but this has been a busy week and working the weekend too. Soon I promise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't want to reread...but I thought Dr. Ron said you had the right GROUP, and that of that group there are 500-1000 different types, only a few of which are bloodsucking. If the are eating brine, they are carnivores, not bloodsucking - bloodsuckers would eat live food, not dead.

Well .....

From what I've been able to learn , they are opportunistic eaters. Meaning they eat scraps or if a fish gets close it may jump on for a while till its full. All I know 4 sure is they are meat eaters and have been on my fish.

isopod....

From the ups and downs, everyone's comments, etc.... what you do is your choice, if you feel comfortable trying to kill them off, with fish, or other predators. If you really wanted to be safe, might want to do what some people had suggested, in cleaning out the tank, drying the rock out, that will kill the pods, at least IME should, though some marine biologist might say otherwise, though I have nothing to back up either claim other than usually water borne critters need water to survive.

So I'd clean it out, get rid of your sand, dry out the LR so it's dead, get a quarantine tank/bucket set up, after you get the LR all dried, maybe a week in a warm dry place.... get another piece of LR for your tank as seed, and after you cure the now dead rock, put it back in the tank and eventually will become live again. Maybe with not all the goodies, and creepy crawlers that you had before, but that's a good thing at least in this case right?

I dunno what you've worked out with Trop, if anything, but I'm sure they could lend some advice in their thoughts and help out where they can. like a lot of the LFS spoken about on this site that are local, they're not trying to be *insert censored word here*, but they want your repeat business, and you to be happy, since happy people bring in more business than unhappy ones. If nothing else, maybe there's a reefer near you who wouldn't mind doing a rock swap. I think Tazzy had posted that he's looking for rock, perhaps if you go with the dry out method, he could give you a couple pieces of LR for a couple pieces of yours after it's dried out, possibly giving him a few LB. extra for his gas money or what not. I think he'll be looking to get rid of a decent size rock with a bunch of GSP on it soon too, that's another seeder for the tank if you go that route.

I know things can get pretty intense emotionally speaking on boards because you can't tell facially and with body language how the person is "speaking" to you, and it's good to see things had settled down a bit after escalating. Keep thinking outside the box for alternate solutions, and in the least feel free to message me if you want to talk about reef stuff or whatever, all I ask is if you make me drive out there you have a cold beer for me.

Hardcz

you bring up good points and honestly why I contacted Isopod hunter about getting some for my tank. I have a Blue Jaw trigger, a Black Durgion Trigger, A Melanarius Wrasse, Two Hawk Fish, a Foxface and Algea Blenny in my tank so I think at least 4-5 fish can do some serious work on these guys might sound insane but if these guys were this nasty then we would have seen and heard of them more in the hobby and the ocean. I do think with the write fish these guys are easy to take care of and a good food source. :D

well to add on I discussed my idea with Ron and he says to hold off till he examines these buggers he said no reason to take any chances till he studies and learns more though it seems the triggers and wrasses could handle them

Have to agree

Shame really makes me angry  that I wasted even two minutes of Dr. Ron's time my apologies to him. even if this was legit, I gave the guy the chance to contact one of the most knowledgeable people in this regards and he couldn't go to the drug store buy some alcohol a box and a few stamps what 20 minutes. in this case my advice is simple

PBITAWA Put Bleach In Tank and Walk Away! :p
