I've never had a change in skimmer production if I use my hands or not. The cup is cleaned with water running and my hands are very dry anyways.

Sunny what skimmer are you running? I've seen it on RC long ago, but don't remember.

DlBerlin, yes I would clean that by hand!

why eww??? all that means is your actually truly clean instead of dirty. Course it wont last long because your skin will produce the oil soon after getting out...
actually, i use my hands to clean out my cup. i was being retarded :2755:

I grew up on a hog farm. trust me when i tell ya i've touched things you don't want to think about :D (not always on purpose)

I use a non abrasive dishwashing sponge - It takes no time to clean.

The skimmer is cleaned everytime the bottom turns brown about every 2-3 days faithfuly.

I have to place my entire hand inside the skimmer etc to clean it out.

Here is a picture for a visual.

I use an old tooth brush and wear gloves to.
But the next time the wife gives me a hard time about a piece of coral or a new fish I've purchased, I might just use hers, and return it to the holder before she notices.-devil 2

I just hope she doesn't read this post, or I'm toast.:jester:

what does everyone clean?

i always just take the cup off and wash it and the cap clean. i've got good algae growth on the inside of the skimmer, on the side my light is on :p what, you don't want algae growth in the skimmer :jester:

when you clean your skimmers, are you just cleaning the cup and cap, or are you cleaning the inside of the skimmer, too?

as far the oils in skin, i don't think they exist in my hands. between being a healthcare worker and a parttime germophobe, my hands are so flippin dry the skimmate actually smooths them :jester:

Man I think im the worst reefer ever!! I barly check anything, do water changes, clean the skimmer, etc. LOL. I empty the skimmer cup and then just run some water over it if it gets too crazy. I think you guys are crazy for being so anal, but then again you guys probably think im nuts. lol. My tank has never had a problem though for me to change my lazy habits.

Yeah, your tank defies all logic. With your habit you should have a sewer, not a fish tank. But, your water is super clear and everything is healthy. I still dont know how.....

well, lets not get too sarcastic on each other. this hobby allows some crazy stuff every now and then with great results. I know a guy jc5205 who never checks hes params...and his tank is off the hook. colors an growth are awesome. i'm sure he runs typcial tank husbandry...but his corals are great...

Actually I gave in to you guys and cleaned my skimmer. Its been pulling up so much more stuff. I have been cleaning it every couple days now. I used a little baby bottle brush and just brush it and rinse it. Works good and is easy. Dang you guys though, now I have something to do every couple days.

how often, when checking parameters, do reefers have to act on them? how often, if left untreated, would the parameters swing back into check?

don't mean this in a negative way. i'm just curious. to be honest, i quit checking parameters a while ago, due to them never being too far off track, and noticing they would always swing back in line. i don't run an sps tank, and i know they are more sensitive, but i don't add anything, except calcium every one in a while, and iodine. so really, all checking levels would do, is tell me to change the water.

also, aa, i kind of enjoy cleaning the skimmer cup :jester: kinda makes ya feel good to take something so filthy, and have it look like new when you're done -yes
