Well I dont know about the rest of you Michiganders, but here in Grand Rapids the winds were whipping like crazy last night and still as I type. Well because of the winds, it knocked a large branch down behind my place and caused a big problem. No POWER. The branch took a powerline causing a small fire on the power pole. The fire department came and so on... Well power has been lost since 1:15am, and its now 8:15am. I couldnt sleep knowing there was nothing I could do at that point. Not knowing when power will be restored... Couldnt take off from work, I open the shop. So now Im stressed. Hopefully I can get out of work early and do something if its not to late. Any suggestions/help would be nice.

Thanks-

Stressed out ILLBILL

Is there anyone you can call to stop buy and get some heat in the tank and stir the water, breaking the surface for some gas exchange.

Power outage

I've been meaning to get one myself and you just reminded me.

You can get a decent gas generator these days pretty cheap. It's a good idea to have one in case the power goes out.

You should beable to run a heater, pumps, some tank lights and a few house lights on even a cheap one.. GL..

Everyone in this hobby needs a generator.

If not, you will lose something at some point.

In the meantime, those batt powered air pumps will suffice with manual temp adjustments as mentioned.

When you get a generator, just run the pumps and heaters... that's all you need for a few days.

Hey Bill, I am out of school at 1:30 and have 20 minutes before I head to work so if you aren't at work and want to run some corals over, you are welcome too! (Remember I am limited on space though) Also, you should call Marc, (fishboy38) He has a large frag tank and I am sure would lend you a hand! If you don't have his number I can give it to you and I don't think he works until later in the afternoon! Also, You might want to call Local Stores like Bluefish, Tim is pretty understanding and might help out. If all else fails, spend $80 and rent a generator... We did that last summer and it was such a stress reliever! If you go that route, you can power your fridge as well... Anyways let me know! - Tim

maybe a kerosene heater in the room near the tanks will help if not a generator!
Although a good thought, I wouldn't advise it.

The combustion will cause CO2 to increase in the room and drive the tank pH to unsafe levels. One time I left my fireplace flue was partially closed once for about 10 minutes after starting our gas log...I happened to be messing with the tank and saw the pH go down by more than 0.5 pH units in 10 minutes before I even knew there was a problem.

Probably worth mentioning also is the fact that CO and CO2 buildup from unvented combustion in an enclosed area (your house) is unsafe for you, your family, and other pets.

Use a few 2liters with hot water to keep the temperature as long as you have hot water. I think better then baggies b/c baggies may leak. I would offer up my generator but it is curently residing with the great powerstation in the sky. I wish you the best.
