Here is another awesome tank I found on reefbuilders that I think you guys will like. The style is that of the seas surrounding a volcano or island but I like it more as the tide pools around an island. The "island" hides the filtration pipes and acts as a waterfall for return. This is another design that would be an awesome one to try if I were going to do a big tank.

Here's the link to the original article: Volcano Tank

Here are some pics: (not my pics obviously)

What do you think? Pretty awesome right?

VERY cool set-up!

I did something similar a while back and one thing that became a major PITA and eye-sore was salt creep on the rocks above the waterline, however if you were good about cleaning it off weekly"ish" it's well worth it!

I want to have a large "lagoon" someday when I have a house that will be similar again, but I'm going to keep rays and mangroves -yes

No offense but they really can't compare unless you are going to have a large rock-scape rising out of the tank. Yours is pretty sandy though.

OK gang - I've had to delete nearly a dozen posts out of this thread (more than half of it!) because somebody took a nose dive in manners, and a few others followed.

Enough - this is a VERY COOL idea, and a great post. Keep it polite.

Carry on...

You know what else is cool about this tank is the little crab he has that lives in and out of the water. I know, I know, crabs are evil but you have to admit it is really realistic considering how most rocky areas at the edge of the sea have different types of crabs living on the rocks. It is something the average person cannot replicate in their aquarium.

I don't understand the purpose of having LR above the waterline? You can't put any corals on the LR that's out of water....what's the point?

Other than that...very cool set up. I always love me some new 'scapes that I've never seen before.

I think it is mostly for looks but in the build thread he says he uses it to disguise the filter return which looks like a waterfall flowing down the exposed rocks. Also, his crab that I mentioned above is not a full blown underwater crab and lives out of the water as well.

no he doesnt have coral on the rock but he does have crabs that stay on the rock and mangroves the grow on the rock. it also serves as a water fall.
