I went thru a battle with ich a couple months back and ended up pulling all fish and placing them into a qt for 8 weeks while letting the display run fallow.. so, heres my question... now that all ich has died off, im going to obviously qt my new fish, but what about macro algae and live rock... what i read is that all i need is one trophant, or something to spread to hundreds. with that said, will my efforts running fallow be altered by unknowingly having something in macro or on a piece of rock from a fellow reefer? do i need to quarrentine everything for a month from here on out?

Do you really want to have to pull all fish for 8 weeks again?
Technically you should qt everything. Don't trust anyone with the welfare of your livestock. There are no short cuts when it comes to reefkeeping.

What meds were you using in your qt/hospital tank? If you were using copper its not an good idea to use that tank for inverts or live rock. Copper will soak into the rock and will leech out over time in your display tank and copper is very toxic to inverts and corals.

If you have any rock or sand in your QT you cant guarantee the absence of any ich. The rock or sand will give the ich a place to reproduce.
No true, the rock and sand has nothing to do with the reproduction of the parasite. Quarantine tanks are kept rock and sand free for medicating purposes and PVC piping is used to give the inhabitants a place to hide and feel comfortable. The parasite host only on fish so if the tank is free of fish for the given period of time therefore the parasite will die.

Yes if the tank is left fallow the parasite will die but if the fish has ich and is in the QT with rock or sand the ich will have a place to reproduce. Without the rock or sand the ich will die once it leaves the host because it will have nowhere to reproduce. It works both ways, tank left fallow for 8 weeks and the ich should be gone also fish in a tank with no rock or substrate for 8 weeks the fish will be free and clear. You cut off the life cycle both ways. Marine Ich (cryptocaryon irritans) - the real scoop - Reef Central Online Community
